DMS student expelled over toy gun incident

A Demopolis Middle School student who brought a toy gun to school last month has been expelled.

City school board attorney Alex Braswell said the board elected to expel the student from the system at his hearing on Monday.

“Due to the severity of the violation — a Class III offense — the board decided this was the best course of action to take,” he said.

The child still could possibly face further action from the court system.

Demopolis Middle School was placed under lockdown on Feb. 19 near the end of the school day when it appeared that a student was in possession of a handgun.

Law enforcement was able to secure the weapon quickly and determined it was, indeed, a toy. The weapon was found to be a BB gun resembling a handgun.
