SGA sponsoring coloring book drive

The Demopolis High School Student Government Association is sponsoring a coloring book drive to help patients at Children’s Hospital in Birmingham.

People are asked to make donations of coloring books and crayons at any Demopolis City School — including DHS, Demopolis Middle School, U.S. Jones Elementary School and Westside Elementary School — at any time during school hours.

“Last year, we did a 5K race to support Children’s Hospital,” said SGA sponsor Rebecca Pipkins. “When we went there to give the check, we got a tour of Children’s Hospital.

“We asked them what their greatest need was, what we could do to help them. They said that when a child comes and is admitted to the hospital or comes in for a treatment, the first thing they give them is a coloring book and crayons, and all of those are donated. They said that they constantly need those coming in, because they let the patients take them home.”

Although the current drive will last through Friday, the SGA will continue taking in donated coloring books and crayons throughout the year.

“This is our community service all year long,” Pipkins said. “This is our big project. This is something that is near and dear to our hearts, to those who got to see the children at Children’s Hospital, who got to see and talk to them.”
