Program offers scholarship moneyBy Matt Cole Published 4:47pm Wednesday, July 18, 2012
The Marengo County Distinguished Young Women scholarship program, formerly Jr. Miss, is being held on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. at the Demopolis High School auditorium.
The application deadline is Tuesday, Aug. 7. To apply, those wanting to participate may visit www.DistinguishedYW.org, and click Participate under the Join Us drop-down box to complete the application.
To be eligible, participants must be high school girls who are graduating in 2013, and must live in Marengo County. There is no entry fee to participate in the program.
Katie Windham, Marengo County’s Distinguished Young Women’s Chairman, said that the program is designed to help girls in Marengo County get help with college tuition.
“We are trying to reach out to girls in the county,” Windham said, “so they can receive help for college.”
Applicants will compete in several categories including fitness, public speaking, interview, scholastics and a 90-second on-stage talent. Participants will be eligible for more than $8,000 in scholarships for college.
“We are looking for well-rounded girls,” Windham said, “but we believe that everybody willing to participate has something to offer.”
For those who apply, the program requires a time commitment, as there are six weeks of practice leading up to the Sept. 22 program.
There will be an orientation session on Tuesday, Aug. 7 at 5:30 p.m. at Robertson Banking Company’s main office in Demopolis
Tickets for the program are $10 for adults and $5 for students.
