Gulf South Conference announces pre-season football honors

The Gulf South Conference released its football pre-season coaches poll and pre-season team Wednesday.

The coaches voted Valdosta State to win the conference with 15 total points, and voted the University of West Alabama to finish second with 14 total points. Delta State, North Alabama and West Georgia received 10, 6 and 5 total points, respectively.

On the pre-season All-GSC team, UWA leads the way with 10 players being selected, followed by eight from Valdosta State. West Georgia has six players on the team, while Delta State and North Alabama have four each.

Representing UWA on the All-GSC team are quarterback Kyle Caldwell, running back Matt Willis, guard Andy Nations, center Skeeter Sellers, linebacker Deon Lacey, linebacker Bryant McGowan, defensive back Otha Foster, place kicker Ryne Smith, long-snapper Matt Humphries and fullback Josh Senkbeil.

Lindy’s Pre-Season Top 25 poll has UWA at 14, but USA Today’s poll has The Tigers at 8.

The Gulf South Conference also has 12 players on the Division II Preseason All-American Teams. UWA players hold two of these spots, as Lacey is on the first team defense, and Willis is on the second team offense.
