Longhorns open season with win

Marengo Academy opened their season against South Choctaw Academy on Friday night and came away with a 13-6 victory.

The Longhorns trailed for a large portion of the game, but came alive in the fourth quarter, scoring two touchdowns to seal the victory.

South Choctaw Academy’s Adam Bonner scored on a one-yard run with 3:49 left in the second quarter, but they missed the extra point.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, Marengo’s Hayden Huckabee, who finished the game with three carries for 85 yards, scored on a 78-yard scamper to the endzone. Brant Lewis gave the Longhorns the lead with the extra point.

With seven seconds left in the game, Huckabee intercepted a Rebels pass and ran it in for six, making the score 13-6, and solidifying the victory.

Huckabee led the team in rushing, followed by Josh Holifield, who ran for 35 yards on 12 carries.

Hayden Hall and Christian Cook led the Longhorns with nine tackles each.

The Longhorns finished the game with 151 total yards of offense, 143 of which were on the ground.
