Johnnie Clayton Stewart, 81, of Greensboro died Thursday, Oct. 4 at DCH in Tuscaloosa.

He was a devoted family man who loved his wife, children and grandchildren and absolutely adored his great-grandchildren.

He served over 20 years in the U.S. Army as a military policeman and retired in 1970 with the rank of Sgt. 1st Class. He served two tours of duty in Germany, two tours in Korea and one in Okinawa. After retiring in 1970, he served with the Greensboro Police Department.

Mr. Stewart was a lifelong, avid Alabama football fan and an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed traveling, cooking and entertaining family and friends (when his health permitted).

He was preceded in death by his parents, Johnie Thetford and Grace Curb Stewart, and his sister, Christine Stewart Barton.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Elva Wolfe Stewart of Greensboro; his chiildren, Deborah Katherine Stewart of Tuscaloosa, Johnnie Byron Stewart, Robert Lyndon Stewart and Adam Patrick Stewart of Las Vegas, Nev.; his brother, Darrell Curb (Rose) Stewart of Booneville, Ind.; grandchildren, Gloria (Leo) Payoyo of New Bern, N.C., Brooks (Robbie) Baldwin of Demopolis, Natalee (Justin) McGhee of Demopolis and Shaundra (Wade) Warbington of Tuscaloosa; and great-grandchildren, Cameron, Cruz and Cesh Baldwin, Caleb Hansard, Kaia Payoyo, Madalyn Howard, Olivia, Harbor and Stella McGhee and Cooper Warbington.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 11 a.m. at Kirk Funeral Homes Greensboro Chapel with family receiving friends one hour prior to the service.

Kenneth Justice will be officiating and Kirk Funeral Homes will be directing.
