Marengo unemployment rises as state unemployment drops

Marengo County’s unemployment rate went up by .2 percent from September to October according to numbers released Friday.

Marengo’s jobless rate now stands at 10 percent, up from 9.8 percent last month. October’s numbers reflect 776 county residents out of work.

Statewide, unemployment decreased to 8.1 percent, down from 8.3 percent in September. That is also down from 8.5 percent in October of 2011.

Counties with the lowest unemployment were Shelby at 5.4 percent, Coffee at 6.6 percent and Madison at 6.6 percent.

Counties with the highest unemployment were Wilcox at 17.6 percent, Bullock at 16.2 percent and Dallas at 14.8 percent.
