Five selected for Marengo Hall of Fame

The second inductee to the fifth class is YANN COWART, who excelled in football, baseball and basketball while attending Marengo Academy. He played on the state championship teams in l980 and 1981, and in his senior year, he served as captain of the football team, and was selected as the most outstanding lineman by his coaches. Following the 1981 season, Yann was chosen to play in the AISA All-Star game, was a member of the Tuscaloosa News Super 11 Team in l981, and was MVP on his senior basketball team.

In l982, Yann walked on at Auburn University, and incredibly, he started for four years, while earning a double major and maintaining a 3.0 grade point average.

He was selected as academic all-SEC three times, academic All-American twice, and walk on All-American in l983 and l984. He played in four bowl games, and was the captain at the l986 Citrus Bowl. Yann is married to the former Susan Ethridge of Sweet Water, and they, along with daughter Hannah and son Ben, live in Montgomery.

Another Demopolis product is THEOPHILUS CURTIS RATLIFF, who had a basketball in his hands when he was not much bigger than the ball itself. He played under Coach Luke Hallmark at DHS from the seventh through the twelfth grades, where Theo developed into a scoring machine and a championship shot blocker. He received All-State honors and represented Alabama at the AAU Nationals.
