The turn of the calendar meant a new commission chairman for the Marengo County Commission.

Calvin Martin, who represents District 4, will now serve as chairman of the commission. John Crawford Jr. from District 3 passed on the gavel at the start of Tuesday’s monthly meeting.

The commissioners rotate the chairman position throughout the five districts annually.

During Tuesday’s meeting, the commission also heard from Ron Howard of the Coast2Coast Drug Card program, a free discount prescription drug card that will be offered to residents in Marengo County.

The customer can present the card at the pharmacy to see if the prescription they are filling qualifies for a discount.

Cards are available at local pharmacies and every time a person saves on a prescription $1 dollar of revenue is generated for the county.

In other business, the commission also approved William “Wade” Driver of Dixon Mills as deputy coroner.

Driver will work alongside Coroner Stuart Eatmon. He is employed with South Alabama Gas.

“I love this county and the people that make up the county and I hope to be able to be of service to help them in their time of need,” Driver said.

Commissioner John Crawford Jr. motioned for Greg Gates to serve on the Economic Development Board pending him agreeing to accept the position. Joy Lee Gunter will serve as a backup pending Gates is unable to serve. The motion was approved.

The commission also gave Commissioner Freddie Armstead the go-ahead to plan the ACA District Meeting to be held in Marengo County in 2014.
