Samuels named All-GSC second-team

LIVINGSTON – West Alabama’s senior forward Steven Samuels was named to the Gulf South Conference 2012-13 All-GSC Men’s Basketball’s second team on Wednesday.

Samuels joined the West Alabama men’s basketball team during the 2011-12 season. Since then he has taken on increasing responsibilities for the Tigers. This season he took on the role of leading scorer for UWA leading his team with 410 total points; 16.4 per game.

The Hartford, Conn. native tallied seven 20-plus point performances this season. He recorded the team’s best individual scoring performance sinking 31 points in a 78-65 win over Delta State on February 28.

Samuels finished the regular season leading his team in four offensive categories. As well as leading scorer, he led the Tigers with 149 total field goals, 45 three-pointers and 68 assists.

Steven totaled 174 boards to average 7.0 per game; the second most for UWA. He recorded five 10-plus rebounding performances and finished the season with five double-doubles.

Samuels was also a defensive threat for his team leading West Alabama with 66 steals and totaling 13 blocks.

The announcement marks the first All-Conference honors for Samuels and is the first second team acceptance for West Alabama since the 2005-06 season.
