UWA baseball rides pitching past Shorter

ROME, Ga. – Senior right-hander Nick Bolleter struck out 11 and scattered four hits over eight innings to lead West Alabama to a 4-2 Gulf South Conference baseball victory over Shorter at the Ledbetter Complex on Sunday.

Jack Cockrum collected three hits, including a pair of run-scoring doubles, while Mitch Holgate went 2-for-3 with a sacrifice fly and a stolen base, to back up Bolleter’s winning effort.

West Alabama’s second consecutive GSC series sweep improves the Tigers to 20-21 overall and 12-7 in conference play. Shorter dropped to 13-26 and 8-11. The Tigers host Miles College at Tartt Field Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Bolleter (4-3) did not walk a batter over eight innings and allowed just one earned run. Jeremy White worked the ninth inning, allowing an unearned run on two hits, to pick up his league leading fourth save. Stuart Charleston (3-6) struck out 12, allowing eight hits and three earned runs to absorb the loss.

With the scored tied at 1-1 after five innings, RBI doubles by Cockrum and Josh Podoris in the top of the sixth gave UWA a 3-1 lead. Cockrum doubled in D.J. Turo with the Tigers’ final run in the eighth inning.

Charlie Gillis had three hits to lead Shorter, including an RBI single in the ninth to push across an unearned run for the Hawks.
