UWA softball opens big weekend with Senior Day

LIVINGSTON – Riding a modest four-game winning streak, the University of West Alabama softball team closes its regular season by hosting North Alabama and Union in Gulf South Conference doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday, respectively, a the UWA Softball Complex. First pitch for both doubleheaders is set for 2 p.m.

Five Tiger seniors will be honored in pregame ceremonies prior to Saturday’s doubleheader against 10th-ranked North Alabama. Those being recognized include right fielder Brooklynn Phillips, center fielder Stephanie Shoup, second baseman Kelsey Cooper, first baseman Brittany Smith and designated player Tamara Vickers.

“This group of seniors mean so much to our program,” head coach Will Atkinson said. “Going into the weekend they are averaging 31 wins a season and have been great community ambassadors and examples for both our program and UWA athletics in general.”

West Alabama enters the final weekend of the regular season with a 27-16 overall record, 14-14 in GSC play. UNA comes to Livingston ranked as the top team in NCAA Division II South Region with a 38-12 overall record, 21-9 in the league. Sunday’s opponent, Union, is 21-20 and 13-17.

Current GSC Pitcher of the Week Sarah Ray is expected to be the starter in the first game of both series for the Tigers. The junior from Yuma, Ariz., is 16-6 with a 2.38 earned run average.

First baseman Ann Shartzer leads a cadre of eight UWA hitters who are batting over .300. The junior from Gulf Shores, Ala., is hitting .380. Junior left fielder Whitney Brown leads the Tigers in home runs with nine and runs batted in with 42.
