UWA men finish third in GSC All-Sports rankings

BIRMINGHAM — Posting its highest all-sports finish in over 20 years, the University of West Alabama finished third in the Gulf South Conference Men’s All-Sports standings for the 2012-13 athletic year. The UWA women’s programs combined for a fifth place finish.

Valdosta State and West Florida shared the men’s GSC All-Sports Trophy, a first in the 42-year history of the award. VSU and UWF each earned 29.5 points each. West Alabama posted its highest Men’s All-Sports finish since 1991-92 with 27.0 points. Rounding out the top five were Christian Brothers (22.5) and Delta State (20.0). Alabama-Huntsville (19.5), North Alabama (18.0) and West Georgia (16.0) were sixth through eighth, respectively.

West Florida earned its GSC-record eighth consecutive Women’s All-Sports Trophy, ninth in the last 10 years, totaling 41.5 points behind Conference Championships in Cross Country, Soccer, Volleyball, Golf and Tennis. Alabama-Huntsville was second with 34.5 points.

Rounding out the top five were North Alabama (29.0), Valdosta State (27.0) and West Alabama (23.5). West Georgia (22.0), Delta State (21.0) and Christian Brothers (15.5) completed the women’s list.

The Conference will present the All-Sports Trophies at its Annual Awards Banquet, Monday, June 24, at the Hilton Birmingham-Perimeter Park. At that time, the GSC will also recognize its “Top 10” student-athletes and reveal the winners of the Commissioner’s Trophies (presented to the most outstanding male and female student-athlete, based on athletic, academic and extracurricular/community service criteria).
