Keep Demopolis clean with Public Works pickup

In light of last Monday’s storms that knocked down tree limbs and blew other debris across Demopolis, the city would like to remind residents of the city’s policy on trash pickup.

When dealing with trees or parts of trees, the Demopolis Public Works Department will pick them up as long as they are no more than 12 inches in diameter and 10 feet long. These must be piled behind the curb, not on the curb or in the street. They will not pick up any wood with tacks or nails in it, and the tops of the trees and limbs must be facing in the same direction.

Leaves, grass clippings, shrub clippings and trash similar in nature should be placed in bags or cardboard containers and placed behind the curb for pickup.

The Public Works Department will not remove any building debris, and it is up to the owner of the property to have it removed.

“The contractor for this kind of work is supposed to have any leftover materials and debris hauled off,” Kim Rodrigues, Demopolis planning and zoning specialist, said.

It is also the responsibility of fence companies, tree surgeons, nurseries and landscapers, or anyone working on private property, to remove all residue and rubbish resulting from the work.

In order to get debris picked up, the property owner must schedule the pickup with Demopolis Public Works by calling 289-3879.

Also, if there is an overgrown lot that is not being taken care of, a report must be filed at city hall, and it will be sent to Paul Williams, who enforces the city code.

“Paul will call the property owner, and if nothing is done, the Mayor can step in with the city attorney and have the property cleaned up,” Rodrigues said.

Advanced Disposal can pick up furniture and appliances on the second pickup of each week free of charge. To schedule a pickup with Advanced Disposal, call 295-8800 to let them know what, and how much, needs to be picked up.
