UWA to dedicate R.T. Floyd Athletic Training and Sports Medicine Center

The University of West Alabama will open the doors to a new facility on Wednesday, Sept. 10, through dedication of the R.T. Floyd Athletic Training and Sports Medicine Center.

The dedication will be held in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium at 1:30 p.m. and will be followed by a reception and tour of the new facility, which is located in room 216 of the James P. Homer Fieldhouse.

The facility is a product of the recent Homer Fieldhouse expansion, which was completed in July. The has more than doubled in space and now exceeds 5,000 square feet to include eight individual offices for full-time personnel, a large office for graduate assistant athletic trainers, a filing and storage room, a conference room, and a hydrotherapy room in addition to a large open area for patient reception, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation.

The new facility’s namesake, Dr. R.T. Floyd, is director of athletic training and sports medicine at the University. Floyd, now in his 41st year at UWA, is a licensed athletic trainer and emergency medical technician. He is recognized nationally as a member of several professional organizations and was inducted into the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Hall of Fame in 2013.

The R. T. Floyd Athletic Training & Sports Medicine Center’s services are available to the UWA students, faculty, staff, and patients in the UWA Service area including students and patients from over 60 schools in the 12 Alabama and six Mississippi surrounding counties.

The Center was established in 1986 to organize and formalize efforts toward improvement of athletic health care in West Alabama through education. It is staffed by eight full time certified athletic trainers, seven graduate assistant athletic trainers and approximately forty athletic training students.

Additional support personnel include orthopaedists, family practice physicians, physical therapists, exercise physiologists, biomechanists, health & physical educators, and others in related areas. The services and programs provided through the Center include injury/illness prevention and evaluation, diagnosis and Referral; immediate and emergency care; injury management; treatment and rehabilitation; and patient education and counseling.

The Center also serves as home to Champion Sports Medicine in Livingston and as a satellite clinic for E. Lyle Cain, Jr., M.D. and other physicians from Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center of Birmingham.
