York man shot, killed by police

Published Thursday, September 18, 2008

YORK – Local law enforcement were dispatched to the scene of a shooting at a York Church’s Chicken yesterday afternoon.

Marengo County Sheriff’s Deputies and Demopolis Police were called to the scene around noon yesterday, where York resident Joe Louis Bell was shot and killed by York Police Chief David Rowry.

“We were called to the scene, basically, to assist with crowd control,” Demopolis Police interim-Chief Tim Williams said.

York Police say Rowry was attempting to apprehend Bell on an outstanding warrant. However, what prompted Rowry to use his firearm was unclear.

York Police, the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and Sumter County Sheriff’s Deputies declined further comment pending the outcome of further investigation.
