The Sucarnochee Revue returns to UWA Aug. 28
Published Monday, August 24, 2009
LIVINGSTON – The Sucarnochee Revue, the nationally syndicated radio program showcasing Black Belt music, returns to the University of West Alabama for a live taping Friday, Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. in Bibb Graves Auditorium.
This month’s Revue features John Maxwell, best known for his one-man theatrical portrayal of William Faulkner; Christian bluegrass singers The Red Roots; and selections from the local production of “Godspell,” a 1971 off-Broadway musical.
Writer John Maxwell of Jackson, Miss., has steadily performed “Oh, Mr. Faulkner, Do You Write?” since its world premiere in 1981. He was named Best Actor at the 2006 Atlanta Film Festival for the film version of the play.
The Red Roots are triplet sisters from Hurley, Miss., who perform across the Southeast. Lead vocalist Nika is featured on guitar and mandolin, while Nicole plays banjo, dobro, bass, and drums, and Natalie plays fiddle, keyboard, accordion, and bass.
“Godspell,” an archaic spelling of the word gospel, features a group of local singers and musicians under the direction of John Brown of York. Based on the Gospel of Matthew, it has played in various touring companies and revivals for over 30 years.
The Revue regulars will round out the show, including producer/host Jacky Jack White, Mississippi Chris Sharp and the Jangalangs, J. Burton Fuller, and Britt Gully.
Presenting Black Belt regional music in its most authentic manner, the Revue was recently honored by the Country Music Association for its continuing efforts to support the grassroots of country music. The show, which features many top blues, gospel, bluegrass, country and roots musicians, has also received recent recognition from the Black Belt Community Foundation and the Alabama State Council on the Arts.
“What surprises people about the show is the fantastic range of musical genres,” Jack Jacky White said. “We have blues, jazz, Dixieland, gospel, bluegrass, classical, country and more. Historically, there is an incredible amount of talent in the area.”
The Sucarnochee Revue airs on 60 stations in 13 states and Australia and on internet radio. The show airs Saturday nights at 10 p.m. on Alabama Public Radio. Now in its fifth year of production, the Revue also tapes the first Friday night of each month at the Temple Theatre in Meridian, Miss.
Tickets are $5 at the door. For more information about the show, contact White at 205-652-6680.
