Habitat or Humanity gets a $1,000 grant

DEMOPOLIS The Demopolis Area Habitat for Humanity Inc. got a substantial jumpstart to making its $20,000 goal with a $1,000 grant from Wal-Mart of Demopolis.
Habitat for Humanity needs to have at least $20,000 before it can start building a home. The organization has a piece of land in Demopolis on Fulton Street donated last August by Alex Roberson.
“Our goal is to get to that point where we start building,” said Freddy Charleston, the president of Demopolis Area Habitat for Humanity Inc. “Hopefully, we can get to that goal sometime this summer.
“This grant will certainly help us to bring us closer to our goal. We want to thank Wal-Mart for thinking enough of Habitat to be a part of the great opportunity to help bring a family a new home.”
To help raise more money, the organization is holding a community yard sale on Saturday, July 25, at the former Alabama State Trooper location on U.S. Highway 80 next to Regions Bank. Habitat is asking people to bring in clean, serviceable or functional household items, clothing or reusable building materials to use in the yard sale, and is collecting those items every Saturday except for the Fourth of July from 10 a.m. to noon at the Culpepper Warehouse on West Washington Street near the intersection of Commissioners Avenue.
To make a donation, people can contact Terry Charleston at 289-7151 or the Demopolis Area Habitat for Humanity office at 289-1177. An answering machine is available at that number to leave a message for a Habitat member to call back. Donations are tax-deductible.
