Vickers: I am not a candidate for Leeds job

Published Wednesday, June 10, 2009

The Birmingham News and al.com reported Wednesday that Demopolis Superintendent of Education Dr. L. Wayne Vickers was one of five candidates for an opening with the Leeds City School System. Vickers said Wednesday afternoon he is not a candidate.

"I have taken my name out of consideration," he said.

Vickers said he thought he was going to be contacted by the Leeds system prior to Tuesday night's meeting if he had made the final cut of candidates but he never received the call.

"I thought they would call to notify me if I was a final candidate and I intended to remove myself at that time," he said. "I didn't receive that call but I have taken my name out of the running as of today."

Vickers interviewed with officials at Saraland in Mobile County Tuesday.

This man doesn't get it; it's irrelevant if he took his name out of the running. HE APPLIED from the south end of the state to the north end. He's been sitting in our central office stuffing resumes in folders. Let's hope the Board is wise during the next hiring.

The School board need to go back to school. This man has done so much for our school system. The board has a hidden agenda that does not represent the best intrest of the school and they should be ashamed of themselves!

Here's what people don't understand (and I don't expect them to): all of the accolades our system has received since Vickers has been here, were in place BEFORE he arrived. The Blue Ribbon award took yrs (and Espy) to achieve and the international reading award goes back to when Mary Glass and Dr. Hill were in charge.

I have heard he has done alot too, but no one can seem to tell me exactly what.. It is pretty obvious that he has been sending out resumes while only being on the job for less than 2 years. It also seems that there were more changes requested to his contract, other than the extension. I believe our board will do the right thing, they are the ones that aren't trying to leave...

He is turning down a 30,000+ salary increase to stay here, all he wants is security for his family. He is not asking for more money! The school board has no idea what really goes on at the school (which is a shame) All you have to do is ask the teachers and students what kind of job he has done and there is your answer. Furthermore there is no other person that can do the job better than Vickers!

Since when has he tunred down anything to stay here?? I didn't say he was asking for more money, but to say he only wants security is not accurate. I have asked the teachers and no one can seem to tell me what he has accomplished... Maybe you could give one example?

He HAS security; he still has another yr LEFT on his contract..... it's NOT a 2 yr contract which is being told. The post before you says that he IS asking for several additions to his contract...the truth will come out.
