Two arrested in drug bust

Published Tuesday, June 23, 2009

The Demopolis Police Department made a significant drug bust on Saturday, charging two Newbern men with possession of marijuana (first degree), netting 31 bags of marijuana and $1,400 in cash.

Darryl Jerome Bates, 21, was arrested on Saturday at about 11 a.m., and charges were pending Monday against Robert Bates, 40.

According to DPD chief Tommie Reese, officers stopped Darrell Bates on U.S. Highway 80 and found two bags of marijuana in the car.

“We effected a search warrant for the car and recovered 29 bags of marijuana,” Reese said. “We also got $1,400 in cash.”

•A man who discharged a weapon in a Demopolis neighborhood in an apparent act of road rage was arrested early Saturday morning after a high-speed chase into Greene County.

At about 2 a.m. Saturday, Travis Davis, 23, of Greene County fired a weapon after a vehicle allegedly tried to cut him off on North Main Avenue. It was unclear whether the weapon was fired at the other vehicle or into the air to frighten the other driver.

“He fired numerous shots,” said Demopolis police chief Tommie Reese. “Officers spotted the vehicle and gave chase over into Greene County at speeds above 125 miles an hour. The driver was later identified and arrested Saturday afternoon.”

Guns and shells were recovered from the vehicle. Davis was charged with attempting to elude law enforcement and reckless endangerment along with other traffic citations.

Davis was processed at the Demopolis Police Department and transferred to the Marengo County Jail.
