Demopolis board of education members (L-R) Linda Russell, chair Gary Holemon, Laura Foster and Jim Stanford discuss actions taken Wednesday.

Board accepts Vickers' resignation

Published Saturday, June 27, 2009

— The Demopolis City Schools board of education formally accepted the resignation of superintendent Dr. Wayne Vickers on Wednesday in a special called meeting.

The board voted 3-0 to accept the resignation and continue to pay Vickers through July 15. Board chair Gary Holemon and board members Linda Russell and Jim Stanford voted in favor of the motion, while Laura Foster abstained. Board member Bobby Armstead was out of town.

Vickers is scheduled to begin his duties as superintendent of the Saraland Schools system on July 15.

The board voted 4-0 to name Dr. Neil P. Hyche interim superintendent. Hyche is a former superintendent of Tuscaloosa County Schools and has helped the Demopolis board over the last several years in searches to fill the positions of superintendent and principal. He aided the board in hiring Vickers and former Demopolis High School principal Dr. Isaac Espy Jr.

“We will start an ongoing search for superintendent, and Dr. Hyche will do that for us,” Holemon said. “He has worked for us for about eight to 10 years, and has helped us with lots of searches.”

Hyche served as superintendent of Tuscaloosa County Schools from 1986 to 1994, earning the 1993 District Superintendent of the Year award. He was a member of the National Association of School Boards, the American Association of School Baords, the American Association of School Administrators and the Technology and Learning Conference.

He served as a principal in the Tuscaloosa County Schools system for five years and taught for several years, having earned his doctorate in education from the University of Alabama in 1972. He has served as a state evaluator, assisting school systems with evaluations, including Vickers’ evaluation earlier this year.

Hyche received the 1989 Conservationist of the Year award from Woodmen of the World, the 1988 Honorary State Farmer of the Year award from the Future Farmers of America and was elected to the board of directors for the American Red Cross. He is a resident of Northport.
