DEMOPOLIS The Demopolis Police Department hosted a training session on Friday that featured officers from around the region, including Tuscaloosa, Greensboro, Livingston and Uniontown.
The session was presented by Stanley Tippins, an investigator for the State of Alabama Medicaid Agency who works for the Fraud Investigations Unit who also works the Institute of Criminal Justice Education at Faulkner University in Montgomery.
“The Alabama Peace Officers Training Commission has established that police officers in the state of Alabama must have at least 12 continuing education units,” Tippins said. “These courses are designed to keep the street patrol officers and investigators abreast on the changes in the laws and any kind of new training that needs to happen for police officers so they can keep a good, current knowledge.
“This particular training is sponsored by the Alabama Coalition against Rape, so what we will focus on is the awareness of sexual violence, the investigation of crimes related to sexual violence, and how to investigate and interview victims of rape and sexual violence.”
DPD training coordinator Leslie Hines organized the training session.
“We had 36 people at this training session,” Hines said. “This was something that Chief (Tommie) Reese was made aware of. There were some grants out there for the training and several dates available. We just picked a date, and we talked with Mr. Tippins about it and got it set up.”
“Any time we can bring some great training to help train other officers in our district, that’s always great,” said Det. Sgt. Tim Soronen. “I always learn something from every class I go to. We’re trying to get more and more training to our area so the people in our area can benefit.”
