City approves actions for rail
Published Friday, November 6, 2009
The Demopolis City Council on Thursday approved an administrative contract for a rail spur to be built at the Airport Industrial Park.
John Clyde Riggs, the executive director of the Alabama-Tombigbee Regional Commission, requested the council action, informing it of the action items on a community development block grant for rail improvements at the industrial park.
The $460,000 grant is 100-percent federal money which the city was not required to put any matching funds toward.
The council approved the administrative contract between the city and ATRC for $25,000. The council approved the contract 5-0 with District 1 representative Thomas Moore abstaining.
“CTCO Shipyards is already there,” said mayor Mike Grayson.
“We hope we have some good news within the week of something else. I do know that there is activity on the airport lot just beyond CTCO, so this grant and rail rehab come in a very timely manner and at a good time.”
The council also approved Goodwin, Mills and Cawood to be the project engineer for $60,000, pending approval by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs.
