Demopolis Higher Ed Center to host open house

Published Tuesday, November 10, 2009

— The Demopolis Higher Education Center will host an open house on Thursday, Nov. 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. The meet-and-greet is an opportunity for people to see the facility following the University of West Alabama becoming the managing partner of the facility.

“It’s kind of a grand re-opening, if you will,” said DHEC director Angelia Mance. “It’s to let the community come in and look around and remind them of what a great facility we have.

“I do think that we forget about it sometimes. It’s at the back of the Sports-Plex, and those of us who use it every day know how great it is, but I think a lot of folks in town may not have visited before.”

Mance said the open house provides local people a chance to see the changes that have been made recently.

“It’s a good opportunity for people to come see what we have. I think they’ll see some progress,” she said. “We’ve redone the sign out front to reflect that we are the City of Demopolis; it’s got the seal of the City of Demopolis on it now. We’ve done a lot of cleaning and updating in this facility.”

Mance said it was also a good chance for people to meet the faculty and the facility.

“The UWA president, Dr. Richard Holland, will be there,” she said. “Our provost will be there, and the people who will be teaching classes will be there. Our deans and staff from different departments will be there, so I think it will be a really good opportunity for people to meet the folks who can help them — not just in classes, but in continuing education as well.”

The campus will also be the site for pre-registration for University of West Alabama classes for the Spring 2010 semester. Pre-registration will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 17, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admissions and financial aid personnel will be on campus for this event.
