Higher Education Center to hold open house
Published Tuesday, October 20, 2009
The University of West Alabama invites the community to an open house at the Demopolis Higher Education Center on Thursday, Nov. 12, from 6 to 8 p.m.
The City of Demopolis in June named UWA as the Center’s managing partner, and the University’s administration is pleased to welcome everyone to the updated 15,000-square-foot facility.
UWA President Richard Holland, Provost David Taylor, and numerous other faculty and staff, will provide information on the institution’s programs offered at the Demopolis site. Demopolis Mayor Mike Grayson and other officials will also be on hand at the come-and-go reception.
Holland says UWA envisions the Center to be a full-service educational partnership offering myriad programs to serve citizens of all ages and stages as they seek to enrich their lives.
“Simply stated, our intent is to determine what educational needs exist and to meet those needs,” Holland said. “We believe this is best accomplished through a truly dynamic partnership that is responsive to the needs of the City, its schools, and business and industry.”
“This is a great opportunity to showcase our facility and welcome the regional community to join us for UWA classes and programs in Demopolis,” said Angelia Mance, Higher Education Center director.
The Demopolis Higher Education Center offers a wide array of academic and continuing education courses, and under UWA’s leadership, began offering workforce technology courses this fall. The Center also has a successful dual enrollment program with Demopolis High School. The course schedule for the spring 2010 semester will be available at the reception.
“UWA wants to serve the area, and we plan to expand offerings each semester,” Mance said. “We encourage students to tell us what courses they would like to see in Demopolis.”
The Demopolis Higher Education Center, constructed in 2004 with federal funds, is a partnership among UWA, Auburn University, the University of Alabama and Alabama Southern Community College.
