City to serve as a stop on Tenn-Tom yard sale

Published Tuesday, September 29, 2009

— The Demopolis Area Chamber of Commerce and the Tenn Tom Tourism Association announce the Trash and Treasure along the Tenn-Tom, a 234-mile yard sale, to be held this weekend Oct. 2-3.

The massive yard sale starts near Iuka, Miss., and follows the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway to Demopolis. A map and listing of participating locations is available by contacting the Chamber of Commerce office.

The route originates at the Tennessee-Mississippi state line and extends south along Miss. Highway 25 and other highways bordering the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway through Tishomingo, Itawamba, Monroe, Clay and Lowndes counties in Mississippi, and ending in Demopolis.

Locally, those who wish to participate as sellers should set up at the Demopolis City Landing barbecue field.

The George Franks Field will be open at dawn, and space is available on a first come, first served basis. There is no charge to participate in the event, and reservations are not required.

When the Tishomingo County Tourism Council conceived the idea in early 2007, it found a receptive partner in the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway Development Authority and the Tenn-Tom Tourism Association.

The first year drew participation primarily in Tishomingo County, but the second year found increased interest in Itawamba, Monroe, Clay and Lowndes counties, said Tishomingo County Tourism Council member Martha Segars.

“We started out by coordinating with a town-wide yard sale held in the town of Tishomingo each year on the first Saturday in October,” Segars said. “Now, we look forward to churches, civic clubs and many other groups as well as individuals participating. We’ve even had many people ask us to do it twice a year.”
