Another elderly Demopolis resident has been the victim of a "home invasion" crime, according to the Demopolis Police Department.

On the evening of April 24, Demopolis Police responded to a residence at 1404 Colony Circle after a report of a home invasion robbery, said the statement from Police Chief Charles Avery.

When the patrol officers arrived the victim, Edith Whitfield, 86, reported that she heard a knock on the door. When she looked out, she saw a young man at the door.

As she started to open the door, the man pushed it open and knocked her down.

The suspect was armed with a knife and demanded money, Avery’s statement said. When Whitfield attempted to call 911, he yanked the phone out of the wall.

He took her purse off the table and ran out the door. Whitfield was not injured in the robbery.

Demopolis detectives investigated the scene, and after hearing the description and details of the robbery from the victim, a search was held in the area.

Avery’s statement revealed that the investigation led to the home of suspect Johnathon Lee Carrol, 18, of 2006 Marengo Drive.

A consent search was done of his room at his home. During the search both Whitfield’s purse and the knife used in the robbery were discovered.

Carrol was arrested and charged with robbery, first degree.

Chief Avery said the arrest of the suspect in less than one hour was due to swift action by his officers.

Detective Sergeant Tim Soronen was the investigator with assistance from Sergeant Tim Williams, Cpl. Daryl Bowden, Officers David Heaton and Zack Fluker, and Bill Mason of the county District Attorney’s office.

There were several assaults on elderly women in June 2001. Demopolis Police announced on December 31, 2001, that Christopher Virgess, 28, of Demopolis was arrested December 26 as a possible suspect in those cases.

He was arrested for attempted murder, rape (strong arm) and tampering with physical evidence.
