Buddy Simpson of the Woodmen of the World Insurance Company will donate a 30-foot flagpole to the city as a memorial to the September 11, 2001 tragedy.

The announcement came at the June 6 meeting of the Demopolis City Council.

A dedication ceremony is planned for September 11, 2002, and City Horticulturist Amanda Smith suggested the pole be placed at the new City Landing pavilion.

In addition, Smith is again taking applications for an assistant to help with the massive job of watering all the landscaping in the city.

In other action from Thursday’s council meeting, Mayor Austin Caldwell got approval from the council for a letter being sent from City Attorney Rick Manley to property owner Dana McCants regarding a zoning dispute.

McCants had earlier made a request for a rezoning of a property on Bell Grayson Road for a duplex. The surrounding property owners objected, and the Planning Commission and the Demopolis City Council denied the request.

McCants has since expressed a concern that one of the surrounding property owners, Lucile and James Carpenter, are using their property for farming, in violation of residential zoning.

The city is of the opinion that the Carpenter’s property, although in a R1 zone, can still be used for the same purpose it was used for when it was originally annexed into the city.
