Robert Earl Jackson didn’t put up a fight the second time.

Late Friday night, Demopolis Police responded to an assault call and found Ceasar Scott Jr., 25, "unresponsive and bleeding from a chest wound." A few minutes later, police arrested Jackson, 48, and charged him with murder.

According to Police Chief Charles Avery, Jackson and Scott got into an argument. A fight ensued and Jackson allegedly pulled a knife on Scott.

Witnesses at the scene alleged that Jackson stabbed Scott, who was transported to Bryan Whitfield Memorial Hospital. According to Avery, Scott was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

When police apprehended Jackson, of 1702 B Street, he "didn’t put up any resistance," Avery said of the suspect clothed in a shirt decorated with a marijuana leaf.

This is the first murder in Demopolis since April 22, 2001. In that case, police arrested Kelvin Finch and charged him with the shooting of both Samuel Earl Monroe and Ida Green. Monroe died from the gunshot wounds.

Avery said he is pleased with the way officers handled the investigation Friday night, and he still believes Demopolis is a safe city, despite the recent murder.

Working Friday’s homicide were Avery, officers Chris McCinnis and Paul Foster, Det. Sgt. Tim Soronen, and Sgt. Tim Williams.

Funeral arrangements for Scott are being held by Larkin&Scott Funeral Directors of Demopolis. Though complete obituary information was not available at press time, the funeral for Scott will be held Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at noon in the Larkin&Scott Funeral Home chapel. Burial will follow in Jefferson Cemetery.
