Woody Collins likes the way the process worked. Beginning within the next month, 13 streets around Demopolis will be paved at a cost of $291,219.

At Thursday’s council meeting, Bob Evans from Almon Associates released the bids for a street paving project the city has discussed for a number of months.

In April, Evans surveyed the city and compiled a list of streets most immediately in need of resurfacing. He announced Thursday that S.T. Bunn offered the low bid for doing the work, and they’re going to complete the paving of more than a dozen streets in the city.

For Collins, his district will receive very little of the work, but the Demopolis councilman doesn’t really care about that.

In the past, the city council has taken each district and divided street paving projects based on each council member’s district. This year, the council decided to do the paving a different way: The streets most in need of resurfacing will get done first.

Evans served as an "impartial" professional who looked at the city as a whole and determined the areas of most need.

In April, Evans presented a list of five different classes of roads that needed to be resurfaced in Demopolis, with Class 5 being the one with the most need.

Initially, the council planned to get bids on just that first class of streets. At the last minute, they decided to get an alternate bid that would include Class 4 &045;&045; the area second in need to Class 5.

S.T. Bunn returned a bid for both classes, and council decided both can be done.

Street that will be paved include: Black’s Drive from Pettus to Jackson; S. Walnut from Hwy. 80 to Windsor; Front Street from Hwy. 80 to Jackson; the Junction of Al’s Lane and Forest Brook; Ashwood from Maria to Elmwood; Maple Leaf from Ashwood to Greenwood; 2nd Avenue from Pettus to Jackson; Pettus Street from Commissioner to Walnut; Pettus Street from Walnut to Cedar; Spencer Street from Dow to the end; Colony Circle from Marengo to Olive; and Lyon Street from Cedar to Walnut.
