Daisy Gilbert, 44, of Demopolis, was arrested Dec. 9 by Demopolis Police based on a tip from someone who had watched the "Crime Watch" segments on WTOK Channel 11 in Meridian, Miss., said Jeff Manuel, Demopolis director of public safety.

She was charged with felony shoplifting.

The segments are aired every Monday and Thursday on WTOK and are part of a national "Crimestoppers" program.

Major Ward Calhoun is in charge of providing the names of suspects from the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department.

The segment on Gilbert was aired three weeks ago.

Calhoun said the "Crime Watch" segments have aired on WTOK since October 2002. They were earlier aired for five years on another Meridian station.

The segment features individuals picked out by the records clerk of the sheriff’s department &045; "people we’ve been looking for," Calhoun said, "people we haven’t been able to serve warrants on."

The segments have been very effective. "About 35 to 40 percent of the people we have put on there we have some resolution" to their situation, the major said.

His department will usually receive information within a couple of weeks once an individual is spotted on the segment.

Manuel’s only other experience with TV justice was when he was previously the police chief in Livingston. A suspect was arrested who had been profiled on the Fox TV program, "America’s Most Wanted," he said.
