Up till now it has been nothing but talk. But finally after years of begging and pleading, Demopolis High School’s softball Lady Tigers can now see the light of day.

Tuesday night the Demopolis City School Board unanimously agreed to fund the purchasing of materials for lights for the DHS girls’ softball field, an approval the DHS softball team has been waiting for many years to here.

“I’m extremely glad that the board has decided to enhance our program,” DHS head softball coach Wayne Harris said. “This will now allow us to play more home games at our true home stadium.”

Demopolis City School’s Superintendent Dr. Wesley Hill was proud to raise his hand in favor of the motion made at Tuesday night’s board meeting. “I’m tickled to death that these girls have come so far over the years.

I’m proud to see that we can finally help girls’ athletics in Demopolis,” Hill said.

Hill said this has been something that has been a long time coming for the Lady Tigers and he is glad to see all the cards fall into place for this to happen.

“In the past it was either a matter of the money not being available or there were just too many other needs that we felt were greater,” Hill said. “But everything has finally come together this year. The DHS girls’ softball boosters have been very patient and persistent over the years and this is a direct result of their persistent efforts.

Board of Education Chairman Mike Randall was also happy to see this day come for the Lady Tigers and was quick to say yes. “It’s something they have needed for a long time,” Randall said. “I’m really excited about it.”

DHS principal Ronnie Roberts could only smile once he heard the news. “Outstanding,” Roberts said. “I’m very excited to see this day come. It’s something that has been needed for a while now. And I’m pleased that the school board has addressed it.”

According to Harris, with the school board funding all the materials for the lights it will not be long before the boosters will have them up and shinning.

“If everything goes according to plan we could see those lights up as early as three to four weeks,” Harris said. “I can’t wait till our first game under the lights.”
