UWA Lady Tigers shine against Valdosta

LIVINGSTON, AL- Nikki Jones had a game-high14 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field, as West Alabama defeated Valdosta State (17-7, 6-6) 63-45 on Saturday in Pruitt Hall. The Tigers improved to 10-2 in the Gulf South Conference with the win.

The Tigers trailed 30-24 at the half as Valdosta State shot 42.3 percent from the floor in the first half, including 57.1 percent from behind the three-point line. West Alabama shot 53.8 percent in the second half, as the Tigers outscored the Lady Blazers 39-15 in the second half to pick up the win.

Yolanda Thomas scored 11 points to go along with nine rebounds and three blocks for UWA. Veronica Lee and Margo Porter had 11 points each for the Tigers. Mallorie Kerby pulled down eight rebounds while also scoring five points.

Danielle Hernandez led the Lady Blazers with 13 points on 5-of-12 shooting from the field. Monica Lee and Katie Steffen scored 10 points each for Valdosta State. Courtney Parker grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for VSU.

The Tigers (18-6, 10-2) return to action on Monday when they host West Florida for a 5:30 p.m. tip off. West Alabama and West Florida are currently tied atop the GSC Eastern Division with identical 10-2 conference records.
