The Demopolis High Tigers baseball team had a field day in Mobile this weekend picking up four wins in the South Mobile Classic.

The 7-1 Tigers crushed Theodore High in a double-header on Friday night winning 6-2 in game one and 9-2 in game two with the Bobcats. Junior Colby Roberts (1-0) got the win in game one with the Bobcats, going seven innings earning 3K’s, while giving up five hits and one walk.

Roberts also lead the team in hitting Friday night as he went 2-for-2 at the plate for two singles. Juniors Devin Goodwin, Clarke Kerby, Bryan Padilla and William Meador collected one hit apiece, while third basemen Seth Basinger got his first dinger of the season on a solo home run.

In game two against the Bobcats it was Devin Goodwin (2-1) on the mound going five innings earning 7K’s, while giving up four hits and three walks. The Tigers tattooed the Bobcats with 11 hits on the night. Junior Bart Pettus showed the Bobcats his better side as he went 3-for-5 on the night with two RBI’s, while first basemen William Meador was 2-for-3, second basemen Blake Butler went 2-for-4 and catcher Clarke Kerby went 2-for-3 with three RBI’s.

Saturday the Tigers faced off with the Alma-Bryant Hurricanes over in Bayou La Battre for another double-hitter and again walked away with two more wins on the season beating the Hurricanes 2-1 in game one and 7-3 in game two.

Pettus got his third win on the season going seven innings earning 5K’s, while giving up six hits and two walks. The Tigers could only manage four hits against the Hurricanes with Chad Schroeder going 2-for-4 and Goodwin and Butler both walking away with one hit apiece.

In game two against the hurricanes it was Jonathan Sommers on the mound going six and a third innings earning 3 K’s, while giving up five hits and two walks. Schroeder finished off the Hurricanes in relief for Sommers, facing two batters and earning 2 K’s.

The Tigers collected 10 hits in game two as Sommers went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI’s, Meador went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI’s and Goodwin went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI’s.

Schroeder, Pettus and Padilla all collected one hit apiece.

DHS head coach James Moody was seemingly impressed with his Tigers performance this weekend, but was even more impressed with the team’s character and drive to win so early in the season.

“We didn’t play great, but we played good enough to give ourselves a chance,” Moody said. “But the one thing about this team is they find a way to win.”
