Fight leads to shoot-out

The Hale County Sheriff’s department is seeking a suspect in a Saturday night gunfight at Hobson’s Grocery on Highway 14 in Sawyerville where two persons were injured. The incident occurred at approximately 9:30 p.m.

According to department records, the owner Charlie Hobson observed an altercation between Kelvin Benson, Lamont Benson and Jessie Fields at the store.

In addition, Cornelius Ingram of Moundville began arguing with a known but unnamed suspect from Sawyerville, and Ingram struck him in the face. Cornelius pulled a handgun and began firing at the suspect, Charles White and Randell Gilbert. Charles White said he was struck in the hip by a shot from Lamont Benson.

The unnamed suspect discharged his handgun in the direction of Kelvin Benson in the store’s parking lot.

Latarsha R. Carter and Curtis Ingram had stopped at the store to buy a beverage. She reported that bullets were fired in the direction of her 1996 Honda Accord. One bullet struck Curtis Ingram.

Other rounds were going in all directions, Hobson told authorities. Ingram is reported to have said he crawled to get out of the way of the gunfire.

The rear window of Carter’s vehicle received $534 in damage, and a bullet was lodged in the rear quarter panel.

The condition of White and Ingram were not known at press time.

No arrests have been made.
