It’s getting very close to election time around the five counties that make up the Demopolis Times’ coverage area. Marengo, Sumter, Perry, Hale, and Greene Counties all have positions that are currently up for election.

In Marengo County, there are two seats for the County Commission as well as two seats on the Board of Education. So far in the race for the County Commission only Ken Tucker has qualified for district two and three people George Baldwin, Kevin Martin and Trezzvant Hopson have all qualified for district four.

Tucker said that he may not have any opponents right now for his seat in district two, but he expects to have some before the final filing day arrives. He also said that he would like to thank all of his supporters for sticking with him over the years.

“I think I have done a good job of representing the people of my district as well as the people of Marengo County,” Tucker said.

Clifton McKnight has qualified for the Board of Education district three, while Barbara (Babs) Pritchett has qualified for district five. Steve Hare and George Gary Bolles have both qualified for Constable.

In Sumter County, there are also two seats on the Board of Education up for election districts one and two. Wendell Larkin is the only person to qualify for these positions.

In Perry County, there are two seats on the Board of Education up for election districts three and four. Mattie Atkins is the only person to qualify so far during the process.

In Hale County, there are two seats on the County Commission up for election districts two and three. There have been three people Lois Fields, Ollie Evans and Joey Hamilton who have all qualified for these seats.

In Greene County, there are two seats on the Board of Education up for election. There are currently no people qualified for these positions.

The Democratic qualifying started on March 6 and will end at 5 pm on April 2, 2004. Anyone interested in running for a position needs to file with the Democratic Party between these dates.
