The 4A defending state champion Livingston High Cougars started the 2003/2004 season off with a 0-5 beginning, while Speights recovered from a wrist injury he sustained during the 2003 football season. Speights returned to the lineup in late December and led the young Cougars back to the AHSAA state finals.
Speights led the 21-13 Livingston Cougars this season averaging 22 points and six rebounds per game. He was the only returning starter from last year’s Class 4A state championship team and did an outstanding job this season of leading such a young and inexperienced Cougars team as far as he did.
Cougars head coach Kenneth Threadgill said that his team would not have made it back to Birmingham without the leadership of Speights. Speights was awarded the ASWA 4A Player of the Year award and was a finalist for the ASWA Mr. basketball award. .
