Completing a Demopolis bypass and four-laning U.S. Highway 80 from Uniontown to Cuba will cost more than $120 million, according to numbers released Tuesday by Gov. Bob Riley.

Earlier this week, U.S. Rep. Artur Davis, D-Birmingham, announced funding in a transportation appropriations bill that could allocate $14 million to the project, but that’s a far cry from the needed revenue it will take to complete the enormous road construction project planned by Riley in a detailed 11-phase program.

During a phone interview Tuesday, Riley said bids will be let for construction of the first phase of an 8-year project that will completely four-lane U.S. 80 — including a short stretch through Uniontown and a 22-mile span of road west of Demopolis to Cuba.

“It’s something that’s been talked about, but the plan is on paper, and all the bids have been scheduled,” Riley said.

According to ALDOT, the first phase of road work will be let in November; however, that’s not exactly when the four-laning will be complete.

The first phase includes the grading, draining and bridge work in the section of U.S. 80 from State Road 28 West to State Road 28 East beyond the Rooster Bridge. Just that work will cost $7.58 million.

Following is a list of the entire project, the cost of each phase, and the expected timeline for the letting of bids:
