The Greene County Commission met in a lengthy executive session Monday to consider issues concerning three county employees.

The first issue involved the termination of an employee from the highway department. After coming out of the closed session, the commission voted to uphold the county’s personnel policies and the recommendations of the supervisor and the county engineer, said commission chairman Chip Beeker Jr.

Commissioner Donald Means made a motion to give the employee unpaid leave time and then allow him to return to work. That motion was voted down 3 to 2.

The second issue involved an employee with the county landfill. County attorney Katie Campbell will send that employee a letter concerning a legal matter.

The third issue involved an employee in the county commission office who has asked for a personnel hearing. That hearing will be continued to a later date, Beeker said.

In other action from Monday’s meeting, the commission received an update Monday on plans to renovate the Eutaw Activity Center. Evan Fitts of Fitts Architects of Tuscaloosa addressed the commission.

The county has received a $215,000 grant from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs to upgrade the center. Fitts said the center’s roof is in terrible shape and will be replaced. The present bathrooms will be renovated, and there is a need for new handicapped accessible bathrooms. The center will be painted, and new flooring will be installed.

The work will be bid in two weeks, Fitts said, and the actual work will take three months to complete. After the roof is finished, Fitts said the center could possibly be used for events while the other renovation work is done in phases.

The West Alabama Regional Commission gained approval to begin preparation of a hazardous mitigation plan for the county. The county is receiving a $12,000 grant for the plan to be developed.

The budget for Greene County RSVP, which has been adjusted with a reduction of $10,000, was approved.

The commission approved a liquor license for Constance Lenelle Albritton. The lounge is located in Forkland.

The commission asked that the county attorney Campbell work with the airport authority on establishing changes in zoning in a 10-mile radius around the airport grounds off Highway 14. The airport authority wants to regulate any obstructions to the air space such as a communications tower.
