The Perry County Commission approved Tuesday an emergency measure to repair the roof of the county courthouse, which sustained damage during Saturday’s evening’s storm.

High winds lifted off a section of the tin roof, and there is more damage to another section where rain could get in.

“The whole roof needs to be inspected,” said commission chairman Johnny Flowers.

The county has received three quotes from companies to do the repair, said county administrator Walta Mae Kennie. During Tuesday’s commission meeting, Flowers gave an estimate of $124,000 to fix the roof.

Leroy Moore, an employee with the county highway department, helped provide a temporary patch to the roof Saturday after the storm, but chairman Flowers is concerned about water leaking in and damaging offices in the courthouse.

In other action from Tuesday’s commission meeting, bids were opened the annual contract for ambulance service. Bids came from NorthStar, Amserve, Care Ambulance, Lifecare Ambulance, Paynes Ambulance and Emergistat.

The commission voted Tuesday to extend the current contract with Emergistat for the next 30 days.

Prices of the bids were not revealed, and the bids were referred to the commission’s Public Safety Committee (commissioners Albert Turner and Tim Sanderson) for its recommendation.

The Public Safety Committee will meet at 8 a.m. on April 19 in the courthouse annex to review the ambulance bids.
