The Alabama State Senate approved local bills Tuesday that will allow Greenetrack to sell liquor and show simulcast greyhound racing on Sundays. In addition, the members of the county Racing Commission will receive raises.

The bills were sponsored by Senator Charles Steele.

Carol Zippert, Sarah Duncan and Lynette Brown currently serve on the racing commission. Their annual salaries will be raised from $30,000 to $42,000. The office of the racing commission is located on the second floor at Greenetrack.

The facility already offers 24-hour bingo gaming. With the influx of interest in bingo gaming, Greenetrack currently employs 270 people.

Greentrack CEO Luther Winn says bingo gaming at the track has stimulated the interest in simulcast racing.

The bills must pass in the Alabama House and be signed by Governor Bob Riley.

Liquor sales must be approved in a vote by the Greene County Commission. The commission was not consulted before either bill was introduced by Steele. Chip Beeker Jr., chairman of the county commission, is not in favor of an all-day liquor license on Sunday.
