More information has been revealed regarding an April 21 incident where an off-duty deputy from the Greene County Sheriff’s Department was shot at while fishing in Boligee. Apparently the deputy was shot at to scare him away from a good fishing spot, Greene County Sheriff Johnny Isaac said Thursday.

Deputy Charles Davis was fishing at a lake off the Industrial Park Road in Boligee. A single rifle shot was fired in his direction. The shot came from across a field.

Davis called for help and fellow deputies Walter Beck and Buster Vester and Eutaw Assistant Police Chief and K-9 Officer Thomas Summerville responded. Two men in a white truck were apprehended in the area.

Michael Steven Drummond, 19, was arrested the same day, for reckless endangerment and attempting to elude. A 17-year-old juvenile with Drummond was not charged, Isaac said, and was transported home by officers. Davis did not know either suspect.

Reports in local media have suggested the suspects may have been roughed up by officers during the arrest. Isaac arrived on the scene, and there was no evidence of officer brutality, he said. “They had them under arrest when I got there. I was there shortly after….They put them on the ground (face down) like they do in a felony stop – because of the weapons. That’s what they’re trained to do.

“…From what I understand, deputy Davis didn’t touch them.”

Authorities have had other problems in the lake area where the incident occurred. There have been kids drinking and having parties in the area, Isaac said.
