The son of the Greensboro Police Chief and an officer from the Greensboro Police Department were arrested Friday night at the scene of an automobile accident.

Claude Earl Hamilton Jr., 23, of 1433 County Road 7, was arrested for DUI, no insurance and leaving the scene of the accident after his 1986 Toyota 4-Runner truck sideswiped a 1999 Toyota Tacoma pick-up truck driven by James Alex.

The incident, which occurred on State Street at the intersection of Seay Street, happened Friday at approximately 10 p.m., according to the traffic report.

Harper’s mother, Italie Harper, arrived at the scene of the accident after being contacted. Once there, she said Officer Ed Jones, Officer Willie Lewis and Assistant Police Chief Willie Hudson — all members of the Greensboro Police Department — were at the scene.

“We noticed [the officers] were taking things out Mr. Hamilton’s vehicle,” she said. “I don’t know what they found in the vehicle.”

The traffic report by Officer Jones stated that Hamilton appeared to be under the influence of both alcohol and drugs.

According to police reports, Hamilton was administered a breath test and blew a 0.12 blood alcohol level. According to state law, a subject is considered intoxicated when his BAC reaches 0.08.

When Ms. Harper approached Hamilton to ask him what happened, Hamilton allegedly shouted racial slurs at her.

Along with Hamilton’s arrest, Officer Lewis was apparently arrested for being under the influence of alcohol. According to Ms. Harper, Assistant Police Chief Willie Hudson apparently took Lewis away from the scene of the accident.

“It wasn’t long after that, we saw [Hudson] putting [Lewis] in the cop car. He must have smelled [alcohol] on him.”

Officer Willie Lewis, 32, of Walnut Creek Apartments, was arrested for DUI, according to records from the Hale County Jail. An arrest report was not available Monday from Greensboro City Hall.

According to Ms. Harper, one other person was arrested during the Friday night accident. Though no other records were made available from Greensboro City Hall, Ms. Harper said another man in the car with Hamilton also was arrested.

In what could have been a difficult situation, Italie Harper praised the work of Assistant Police Chief Hudson for the way he handled the accident.

Greensboro Police Chief Claude Hamilton Sr. was not available Monday for comment on the incident.
