CARROLLTON, GA – The University of West Alabama baseball team dropped two games to West Georgia (33-15, 9-10 GSC) on Saturday in Carrollton, Ga., falling 9-8 in eleven innings in game one and 7-6 in game two. But did manage to clinch a spot in the Gulf South Conference Tournament Sunday with a 12-6 victory.

The Tigers finish the regular season 31-20 overall and 10-9 in the GSC. West Alabama will be the number-four seed from the East in the GSC Tournament (Millington, Tenn.), and will take on the number-one seed from the West in Delta State on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. in the first round of the double elimination tournament.

The Tigers trailed 2-1 after four innings, before scoring four runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 5-2 advantage. The Braves cut the score to 5-4 after six innings, however UWA scored two runs in the seventh inning and five more in the eighth to go up 12-4. West Georgia added one run in the eighth and one in the ninth, but West Alabama was able to hold on for the 12-6 victory.

Michael Riggs (4-0) picked up the win for the Tigers, allowing four earned runs on eight hits in five innings pitched. Matt Chambless earned his third save on the season, throwing four innings and allowing two earned runs on seven hits. Jason Ledbetter (7-3) took the loss for the Braves, allowing five runs (one earned) on six hits in 4.2 innings pitched.

Dustin Roberts had a big game for the Tigers, going 3-for-5 with a grand slam and six RBI. Scott Needs went 1-for-3 with a home run and four RBI, while Jason Floyes added two hits. Dustin Carter and Jonathan Lindsey each had one hit and one RBI for West Alabama. Daniel Wilson added two hits with a double.

Ben Phillips went 3-for-5 with one RBI for the Braves, while Brandon Lewis added two hits with a home run and one RBI. Harris Lee, Jared Rolen and Jay Austine had two hits each for West Georgia.

In game one on Saturday, the Tigers scored one run in the top of the eleventh inning to break a 7-7 tie before the Braves would score two runs in the bottom of the inning. Clint Chambless (0-2) took the loss for UWA, allowing two earned runs on one hit in one-third of an inning pitched. Michael Kierce (3-0) picked up the win for UWG, throwing one hitless inning.

Rafael Farrell and Randall Minton had three hits each for the Tigers in game one. Jason Floyes added two hits with a home run, two RBI and a stolen base, while Scott Needs had a home run and two RBI. A.J. Ray had two hits and two RBI, and Dustin Carter went 2-for-4 with a double.

Harris Lee went 3-for-5 with a home run, a double and two RBI for the Braves in game one. Jared Rolen added two hits and two RBI, while Brandon Lewis had two hits and a stolen base.

In game two, UWA led 6-2 after three innings as UWG scored a single run in the fourth and four in the fifth inning for the 7-6 win. Lee Boyd (6-1) took the loss for the Tigers, allowing seven runs (five earned) on eight hits in 4.0 innings pitched. Kierce (4-0) also picked up the win in game two for the Braves, throwing 4.0 innings and allowing no runs and five hits.

Farrell went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and one RBI for UWA in game two.

Daniel Wilson had two hits with a double and two RBI, while Brandon Boles added two hits and a stolen base. Needs had one hit and two RBI, and Carter added a double and one RBI.

Lewis went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and one RBI for UWG in game two. Chris Meadows had a home run and two RBI, while Lee added two hits and one RBI.
