George Spence Day, the annual fundraiser and fun day for the Demopolis Dixie Youth Baseball and Softball program, originally scheduled for Saturday, May 15, has been officially cancelled.

Demopolis Dixie Youth President Alfred Padilla along with Demopolis Dixie Youth Board Members and Player Agent at Large Mack Davis, unanimously agreed Monday night that it would in the best interest of the program to cancel this weekends events due to a lack of volunteers with both the Demopolis High School baseball and softball team’s competing for state championships.

“This year, it just so happened that three of Demopolis’ biggest baseball/softball events landed on the same day,” Padilla said. “Many of our board members, parents and local volunteers, either have kids of their own, family members or relatives on one of those two teams, and will be traveling to Montgomery in support of the Tigers. George Spence Day requires a large number of parents and volunteers to run smoothly and be successful, and we felt that it would be best to push it back this year.”

This year marks the fifth year for the annual fun filled day, which many have come to thoroughly enjoy. According to Davis, the event generates about one-third of Demopolis Dixie Youth’s annual revenue, but in no way will canceling this year’s event hurt the program.

“Canceling might hurt our budget, but it won’t hurt the program by any means,” Davis said. “But we are hoping to reschedule within the next 3-4 weeks.”

As of now, no official date has been set for the event, but Padilla says that the board will meet next week to decide if, and when to reschedule the event.

“The board and I will meet sometime next week to decide when to reschedule the event,” Padilla said. “It will probably be within the next three weeks.”
