Former Hale County Commissioner Buster Brown said if incumbent District 2 Commissioner Lois Fields gets her job back, he wants his back, too.

Brown was ousted after three terms of service in the 2000 election by a scant 33 votes because his name did not appear on the ballot in Akron. He launched a write-in campaign, but still fell short.

“I never said a word about it,” Brown said Friday, indicating that although he didn’t challenge the election then, he would pursue action if Fields were to be declared the winner in her race against Elijah Knox. Fields is contesting the election results by challenging voter lists in Akron.

Brown retired from the county after 31 years “on the road.” He then ran for and was elected to the commission.

“I know where everyone lives – I know all of them and they all know me,” he said. “…I worked all those years and never have done anything I’m ashamed of.”

Brown, a Democrat, wouldn’t say what his next step would be if Fields is declared the winner, but emphasized he would try to have the 2000 election overturned.
