Funeral services for Mrs. Loretta Washington, Greensboro, will be Saturday, July 3, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. at the Union Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. David Simpson officiating. Interment will follow the Sarah Christian Cemetery. The body will lie in state from 12:00 Noon to the time of the service. Agnew Funeral Home, Greensboro directing.

Mrs. Lucille Holley, 87, Moundville died Tuesday, June 29, 2004 at the Colonial Haven Care Rehabilitation Center in Greensboro. Funeral services will be Saturday, July 3, 2004 at the Willo Spring Baptist Church in Greensboro with interment in the Holley Family Cemetery in Moundville. Rev. Calvin Johnson will officiate. Washington, Paige, and Rollins Mortuary of Greensboro is directing. Family hour will be Friday, July 2, 2004 from 4-7 p.m. at the Washington and Paige Mortuary Chapel. The body will lie in state from 12:00 noon until time of service.

John James Rhodes, 82, of Greensboro died Wednesday, June 30, 2004 at Colonial Haven Care and Rehabilitation Center in Greensboro. He had celebrated his 82nd birthday on May 31, 2004 and his 58th wedding anniversary on June 2.

Born in Birmingham, Mr. Rhodes attended Ensley High School and worked in the steel mills before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps where he served in the Pacific during WW II.

In the fall of 1948, he moved his family and dairy operation from Trussville to Greensboro where he later worked for the Ford Tractor Company; the formed Rhodes Construction Company and finished his working life as a utilities contractor. After he retired, he cared for his beloved wife, Helen, and learned to make bread when she couldn’t any longer. He had a twinkle in his eye, many stories to tell, and many friends. He will be missed and remembered for his strength, integrity, hard work and humor.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Rhodes, of Greensboro, daughters, Cheryl R. West, Hoover, Joyce (Dick) Adams, Winter Garden, Fla. And Myrial Morrison, Sawyerville; sons, John (Jack) Rhodes, Newbern, Bob (Arlene) Rhodes, Havana; a brother Rev. Mabry (Mary Lou) Rhodes, Hayden, Sister, Miriam (Tommie) Long, Selma, grandchildren, Amy (Barney) West of Minneapolis, Minn, April (Michael) Suprenant of New York, NY, Will Adams of Tallahassee, Fla,

Ben( Chrystal) Rhodes, Tuscaloosa, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be Friday, July2, 2004 at 11:30 a.m. at Oakwood Cemetery in Greensboro. He is a longtime member of the Greensboro Baptist Church and in lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Greensboro Baptist Church Building Fund. Pallbearers will be Ronny Rhodes, Floye Meigs, Douglas Lesley, George Emory Elam, Lamar Hall, and John Stokes. Kirk Funeral Home Greensboro Chapel is directing.
