West Alabama rallies in fifth to advance over Bessemer in Division 2 tourney

TUSCALOOSA – The West Alabama Post 29 American Legion Seniors picked up their first win of the American Legion Senior Division 2 Tournament Thursday night with a come from behind 6-5 victory over Bessemer Post 149.

West Alabama, who trailed Bessemer throughout five innings, rallied from a 5-1 deficit in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-5 lead with hits from G. W. Washington (single), Blake Butler (RBI single) and Matt Busbee (RBI single). Devin Goodwin picked up a walk, while Bart Pettus ripped a two-run double and William Meador, the one who started it all, sent a solo shot over the fence in centerfield.

Pettus would pick up the win for West Alabama going six innings earning 3K’s, while giving up five runs on eight hits with one walks. UWA freshmen pitcher Matt Chambless would pick up the save, as he closed the door on Bessemer in the seventh. Chambless gave up one hit before striking out the last three batters he faced.

Bessemer jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning, but Pettus would cut that lead to down with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning making it a 4-1 game.

With the win, West Alabama finds themselves in the winners bracket. And after having Friday off, will take on the winner of Game 3’s Tuscaloosa Post 34/ Centerville Post 128 match-up today at 5 p.m. on the campus of Central High East in Tuscaloosa.
