LIVINGSTON – University of West Alabama Head Football Coach Sam McCorkle has announced that the UWA coaching staff will conduct a football clinic for ladies to be held on July 29, at 6:00 p.m. in the Homer Field House on the UWA campus.

McCorkle, who returns as the head coach at West Alabama after spending the 2003 season as the outside linebackers coach, says that though this will be the first year to have such a clinic at UWA, he has had tremendous success with teaching ladies the game of football throughout his 30-year career as a coach.

“I started the clinic when I was at Austin Peay (1993) and continued it at U. T. Martin,” McCorkle said.

“The clinic has had a great following everywhere I’ve been and I’m sure that will continue here at UWA.”

McCorkle says that despite the thoughts that many may have when they here of a football clinic for ladies, the clinic has nothing to do with trying to get ladies to play the game.

Although McCorkle obviously has nothing against the idea, after all, he does have a lady team member in place-kicker Tonya Butler.

“This clinic is a great way for those ladies who have either a husband or son that love the game of football or even play the game of football, to learn more about it so as to add to their enjoyment of the game, McCorkle said.

“It’s about having fun and learning the basics of the game.”

The Tiger coaching staff will teach the basics of football and the rules of the game. Ladies are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing that they can move around in and tennis shoes, but McCorkle says not to worry ladies, there will be no hitting or tackling involved.

“We will give the ladies a better basic understanding of the game of football, and give them a chance to see what goes on behind the scenes,” McCorkle said.

“You would be surprised with how many ladies there are out there who wonder about the many things most football fans take for granted, like what goes on in a huddle.”

Anyone interested in attending should contact the UWA Football office at 205-652-3483 or just come to the Homer Field House on July 29, at 6:00 p.m.
