FORKLAND – Town hall was closed much of the day Monday, after thieves struck the city offices, and targeted the town’s vacant police offices in the rear of the building.

Mayor Eddie Woods discovered the break in about 7:30 a.m. Monday and notified the Greene County Sheriff’s Department, which is responsible for answering calls in the town in the absence of municipal law enforcement officers.

According to City Clerk Cyntha Stone, sheriff’s deputies investigating the scene said a heavy object was used to break into a metal door in the rear of the building.

The mayor ordered an inventory be conducted to determine what items were taken in the burglary, and closed town hall for the remainder of the day, pending further investigation by the sheriff’s department and after locks were replaced on the back door.

Thieves also removed the building’s power meter in an attempt to defeat any alarms in the building, officials said.
